25 years of 'The Last Command'
25 years ago today ' The Last Command '' the bands 2nd album was unleashed taking the band a step beyond what was accomplished with the ferocious debut ' W.A.S.P. ' Showing the band was not content with just a mere rehash, the album showed a strong improvement in songwriting as Blackie Lawless started to develop more as a songwriter and musically W.A.S.P. tightened as a unit from the intensive touring schedule of 82- 84 that surrounded the first album.
' The Last Command ' was a huge push forward musically and featured elements that would later show themselves more as time went by with the creation of 'The Headless Children ' & ' The Crimson Idol '' albums and beyond.
As ' W.A.S.P. ' before it 'The Last Command' gave birth to several live concert staples that are still played live regularly today 'Blind In Texas' the now legendary 'Wild Child' 'Widowmaker' & the title track ' The Last Command '' (which was recently resurrected at this years Sweden Rock Festival)...the album was a sonic force to be reckoned with and gathered very favourable reviews across the board.
[A little known fact about 'Wild Child' is that Blackie approached Motley Crue with 'Wild Child' in 1983 this but Nikki felt the vocals were way out of Vince Neils range which worked out great as it went on to be one of the trademark W.A.S.P. songs!]
' The Last Command '' album went on to be the bands 1st million seller and was the beginning of catapulting W.A.S.P. out of the clubs and into the arenas around the world for a tour that showcased new improved staging featuring the huge impaled heads from the album artwork onstage.1985 saw the likes of Metallica opening for W.A.S.P. on a tour across the US [See photos] as they supported their ' Ride the Lightning' album. 85' even saw W.A.S.P. team up with KISS for a now legendary string of dates which went down in rock history as one of the best rock events of that period. To show their appreciation on the last date of the of the KISS tour, for end of tour laughs members of the band took to the photo pit and threw raw meat at KISS during their performance.
'The Last Command' album and tour were a huge success and W.A.S.P. fever began to hit the mainstream media with band hitting the front covers of all the major music magazines worldwide such as Kerrang!, NME, Metal Hammer, RAW, Germanys 'Heavy' magazine, Circus, Hit Parader & even Japans 'Rockin f' to name a few.

'W.A.S.P.' The Seminal Debut Album Is Released - August17th, 1984
26 Years ago today the album that started it all 'W.A.S.P.' was released on the unexpecting public.
Widely regarded as one of the strongest debut albums in hard rock/metal history, 'W.A.S.P.' left a trail of destruction and spawned several live concert staples in 'On Your Knees' 'L.O.V.E Machine' 'I Wanna Be Somebody' 'Hellion' & the omitted 'Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)' a song that was the centrepiece for the now infamous PMRC hearings due to its explicit nature.
The album originally exploded onto the scene without the intended leading track 'Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)' due to the record label objecting to it appearing on the album and would only be willing to release the it as a single in Europe if it was contained within a black sleeve with a sticker warning of offensive lyrical content.
Not one to make compromise the band seeked an independent label to release the single. Music For Nations took the reins and released the single as intended with the original artwork intact and 'Animal' on its own went on to sell rapidly overseas like a wildfire engulfing all in its wake in April of 1984. 'Animal' was later reinstated as the leading track when the album was rereleased 1997.
The news of the single coupled with the intense and now legendary W.A.S.P. live show of 1982-1984 propelled the ferocious debut album forward like a bulldozer on a rampage starting off a trail of events that would lead the band to the very top of the metal scene not only in Los Angeles but the world over.
